I woke up Wednesday morning, looked out the window and saw the Gulf of Mexico. My wife and I were vacationing in just west of Tampa, Florida, visiting family over Easter.
Much to my dismay, I woke up Thursday morning, looked out the window and saw a sea of snow instead of warm, welcoming water. Our vacation ended Wednesday afternoon, and we were quickly reminded that we were back in Siouxland.
Precipitation started falling late Wednesday, much of it still rain. But as temperatures cooled, we quickly saw the change to snow. Some areas of Siouxland saw a lot more snow than others, with the higher amounts generally in Northeastern Siouxland. Below is a look at the snow totals the Storm Team 4 Weather Watchers reported Thursday afternoon.
March is generally a pretty snowy month across Siouxland. In Sioux City, March brings an average of 5.8" of snow, but just one year ago March brought 12.3" of snow to Sioux City.
We won’t see over a foot this March, but with Thursday’s snow, we have climbed above normal for the month. With a few days left in March, we have already surpassed the monthly normal with 6.0" in Sioux City. That 6" is just over half-an-inch higher than we normally expect through March 27.
The most out-of-whack statistic on this image is our seasonal snowfall. So far this winter Sioux City has received 43.1" of snow, 14" above normal for this point in the season. By the end of the snow season we normally see just over 30" of snow, so we are already well beyond that too.
The nice thing about late season snow is it doesn’t stick around very long, and our weather this weekend will ensure that. While we won’t see a lot of sun, rain showers and temperatures above freezing will eat the snow away in no time.

Could you help? What is the ground like in Sioux City, covered with snow? How much? We are supposed to play soccer in Sioux City tomorrow and I’m wondering if there a “snow balls” chance that we will actually get to play the games?
Pam,
There is still a little snow on the ground here in Sioux City, especially on grassy areas. It will continue to melt the rest of today (Friday), and will keep melting on Saturday. So if your games are in the afternoon on Saturday, there is a chance all the snow will be gone⦠but the field will likely be soggy. Unfortunately there is also an increased chance of light rain on Saturday afternoon, which could hamper your games as well.
